Scuba Certification in Kansas

When most people think of Kansas, they think of wide, expansive fields, sunflowers, and the song “Home on the Range.” However, that doesn’t mean you can go scuba diving in Kansas. Kansas doesn’t have many dive sites, but that does not mean they can’t be found. The Sunflower State is a great place for beginners to get started with diving. Some of Kansas’s dive sites may have special requirements or regulations, so check each site’s specific requirements before attempting a dive.

Scuba Diving Requirements in Kansas

In Kansas, a diver is not required to have their scuba certification in order to go diving, but it is highly recommended that you obtain it for your own safety and for the safety of those diving with you. Many of the companies that offer scuba transport or scuba charters will require that divers be certified before taking them to a dive site.

Kansas has only a few regulations for divers and those operating vessels around divers:

  • Divers must use a dive flag that is at least 21″x21″
  • Dive flags used on Kansas state waters must be red with a white diagonal stripe
  • When diving in federally controlled waters, divers must also display the blue and white Alpha Flag
  • Vessels should stay at least 100 feet away from dive flags, but are not required by law to do so
