Scuba Diving Requirements in Michigan

Michigan does not require divers to become certified before diving in its waters. However, it is highly recommended that divers be certified before attempting a dive in any of the Great Lakes. Although they are lakes, don’t be fooled: the Great Lakes are essentially inland seas, and can be just as dangerous as the open ocean. For this reason, all divers interested in diving in Michigan should get their scuba certification.

There are some regulations in place for divers and vessel operators operating near divers:

  • Divers must use a red and white dive flag
  • Divers are required to stay within at least 100 feet of their dive flag
  • Dive flags must be at least 14″x16″ with a 3-1/2″ stripe running diagonally across it
  • Boaters are required to stay at least 200 feet away from dive flags
