Scuba Certification in Ohio

Ohio, the 17th state, is known as being the home of Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the mooon. The state has a heritage of exploration and adventure. This makes it a great place for scuba diving as well. Ohio has plenty of great scuba diving sites, a number of which are former quarries. Gilboa Quarry, Whitestar Quarry, Portage Quarry, and Natural Springs Resort are some of Ohio’s best diving sites. Some diving sites may have special regulations or requirements, so be sure to obtain the most up-to-date information on the site you plan on diving before setting out on your excursion.

Scuba Diving Requirements in Ohio

State law in Ohio does not require divers to be certified. However, it is always a good idea for divers to complete a scuba certification program before getting in the water. Why? The answer is simple: the certification program teaches all of the safety precautions and diving skills divers need to know. While their are different levels of certification, mostly for diving specializations, a basic course is what will be best for many divers.

Though Ohio law does not state that divers must have their scuba certification, there are several regulations surrounding diving activities and vessel operation around divers:

  • Divers are required to use a blue and white Alpha flag when diving from a stationary (anchored) vessel
  • Divers are advised to use a red and white Diver Down flag when diving solo, or from anything other than a vessel
  • Boaters and vessel operators are advised to stay at least 300 feet from all dive flags
